My shifter is in need of a rebuild, it rattles unbelievable. Is there anywhere I can by the individual parts of the shifter? Each one of the "teeth"? How about the rods individually? The only things I've seen available is complete rebuilt shifters, I just want to overhaul mine.

Re: 72 Shifter Rebuild
Zip sells a kit for about $60 with most of the parts to rebuild your shifter. However the linkage is not included. They have a linkage set which will put you back another $75.00. Long Island sells individual pieces for the midyears, but I dont know who has the equivalent for the C-3's. I'm also not sure if the C-2 parts will work for the C-3's. I'm assuming of course, that you have a 4-speed tranny.

Re: 72 Shifter Rebuild
Bruce,
Contact Volunteer Products (423-521-9100) in Knoxville, TN. Do a search on the name in NDB; I think there was a thread about them recently that may provide an "800" number or a website address.
I bought individual shifter parts from them several years ago. Prices from their 1996-1997 catalog look moderately high, but if you don't need all the shifter levers, you might save a little money. Example: Part SH036, shifter 1st & 2nd lever (this is one of the "teeth" you were talking about), $14.00. This price may have changed since the '96-'97 catalog. They also have individual shift linkage parts.

Most of the shifter assembly parts are GM-discontinued. As others have advised, you can get them in reproduction. However, I DO NOT RECOMMEND shifter rebuilding. In my experience, you will often not be satisfied with the results. Some of this is caused by mating a worn shifter lever with new parts. The shifter lever, itself, has been GM-discontinued for many years and is very difficult to find.
My advice: purchase a NEW shifter assembly. It's GM #3960609 and it's still available for a GM list of $227.00. Cheap at twice the price. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 72 Shifter Rebuild
There was a nice article in Corvette Fever a while back on shifter rebuilding. The gist of it was that putting in new friction material (nylon?) solved most of their rattling problems. It was a very straight forward rebuild with no hidden tricks. If you decide to go with repro shifter rods, most of the major supplier have them, as others have stated. I bought a complete repro shifter and linkage for my 66 to bring it back to normal appearance. It has worked quite well for five years now. Gary 21316- Top

Re: 72 Shifter Rebuild
I have a similiar question/problem...I have a C3 mainshift lever and have been looking for the 1" shorter C2 version, as Joe states they are impossible to find. I have been looking for some time to buy a good used piece or swap and have had no luck. I really do not want to buy a new shaft from LI supply or others. I am still trying to find the missing short shaft. If anyone has one that they want to part with...it would really make my day!Dino Lanno- Top
