    61 Tach

I need to replace the tach in my 61 with an electronic unit as the ZZ4 I am puttin in the car has an HEI distributor. Does anyone know the diameter and depth of the stock units? Better yet, does anyone have any recommendations for a GM Performance replacement or aftermarket unit that will fit in the housing?

Bob, It won't be hard to buy a small unit and use the original tach face and housing. Just swap out the guts and retain the original look. Most electronic units are smaller inside than the mechanical one. Should be plenty of room, just getting the numbers right so you know the real red-line.

There is another alternative that you may not have considered. Hi-Tech Innovations manufactures an HEI distributor conversion which has a tach drive. They might even be able to convert your existing HEI. Purchasing these units outright is quite expensive ($500+), but it might be less with exchange or to have yours converted. In any event, although expensive, this route might not be all that different than the OVERALL costs of what you're contemplating. Plus, you would maintain originality of your instrumentation and that has value, too.

Unless your car was a 315 HP to start with, the original tach should have driven from the generator anyway. Case will have stamped something like "reads cable RPM" vs "reads twice cable speed". You would have to have the proper tach head and of coures the tach drive generator. The catalog vendors have all the parts, but it isn't a cheap solution.

Bob, Years ago in a previous life -- my car had been raced on the drag strip here and the owner at that time had take the original tach out and modified the gauge cluster housing so that a Sun SuperTach would fit. It didn't look bad and it worked. But, you wouldn't get many points for originality and the housing is no longer useable if you want to go back to the original tach. Having just gone through the excercise of locating a suitable replacement housing and a 315 HP original Tach -- I would not recommend buggering up either the tach or the housing. I'd get an after market tach and clamp it to the steering column. My 2 cents.
