    65 Hubcap restoration

What Stainless steel shop does the best restoration of 65 hubcaps/wheelcovers? Mine have the typical dents and are very scuffed up. I would buy a new spinner kit. Or would I be better off buying a new import repo? A friend, highly recommends Grossmuellers. I was'nt aware they performed such work, or should I say still do this type of work. Thanks DG

I got reasonably good results from Sihilling's Metal Finishing in So. Cal.

BTW: has anyone had the repro '65 caps judged yet? They go for as low as $405 on eBay which isn't bad considering the spinners alone are $140.

One SS restorer told me to expect near $500.00 to do all 4 caps. Again, repo. may be the better choice but I don't have any to compare. Maybe I'll buy a set of repo. and lay them next to mine and judge them for myself. DG

        Re: 65 Hubcap restoration

I have a 65 with original wheelcovers and I had been waiting for the introduction of the repros. but from what I saw at Pa. last year - I am never going to be a master judge but as good as they were I could pick out the repro. I have also no idea what the point deduction might be but if the cost of doing your originals is Over $500.00 I might think the repros. might just be a better value for a slight deduction. Good luck.

          Dick,
The reproduction '65 wheel covers that I saw in Carlisle last year were not something that I would want on my '65. They are made in China and have a definate gold hue to them. Perhaps, there are other reproductions that look better.

I did purchase a set of reproduction '65 spinners from Corvette Specialties of MD. that I am happy with.

          Regards,
          Gene

              Jim,
I hope that I did not confuse anyone about my statement regarding wheel covers. I did not intent to imply that the China covers were from CS of MD.

I saw the China covers (with the gold hue) at some of the vendors. The centers that I purchased from CS of MD are excellent. Perhaps their wheel covers are also excellent. I have not seen them.

Thanks for the input and clarification.

              Best regards,
              Gene
