I have a 1972 C3 with a 454 that is almost all correct. I am detailing the engine and I have the tower type hose clamps on the bypass hose. They were painted Chevy orange somewhere along the way, is this correct?

Re: 1972 Hose Clamps
The by-pass hose, between the water pump and intake manifold on Mark IV engines, was installed at Tonawanda and some orange overspray is to be expected on the hose and clamps. These clamps, however, are not tower style, but are SAE type D clamps. See page 83 of the fourth edition of the TIM&JG for a drawing of the proper clamp.Terry- Top

Re: 1972 Hose Clamps
If the tower clamps are original Sure-Tite clamps, they will be dated month/year. Check for a date; if the clamps are dated contemporary with, and prior to the engine build date, they are original. Well, maybe not proof positive...I suppose they could have migrated over from the heater hoses, but they are most likely original to the car.- Top

Whoops...mea culpa!
I just caught the thread was about the water pump bypass hose and NOT the heater/rad hoses. Yep, as others have said the water pump bypass hose WAS installed at the time the engine was built/painted. There was some 'effort' to mask this area during painting, but you'll typically see orange at the ends of the bypass hose and sometimes pretty full orange on the mid section of the hose depending on painter due diligence...- Top
