    Problems after Fuel Pump Rebuild

Took my car out after replacing the fuel pump and it ran great for 15 minutes. Then started bucking like a bronco and stalling at idle.

For background, it's a'64 327 300hp but had a 350hp fuel pump installed when I bought it. Ran beautifully from day one. It wasn't an issue to replace with the correct one re my bowtie aspirations as it wouldn't count regardless as it wasn't the original. Had the correct coded one rebuilt by Mr.Arthur Gould. Although it doesn't seem to be a fuel pump problem, it seems like an odd coincidence.

Pulled into a parking lot, checked the carb. Front bowls were filled with gas. Believable as it felt like it was flooding out. Restarted, and drove home 2 miles on the fast side as it ran better at higher speed.

It sounds like it could be a float problem but that is a strange coincidence right after the pump installation. Any clues would be most appreciated as I'm driving the car 4 hours to Pittsburgh mext weekend and now I'm nervous as hell.

Probably trash in the needle and seat.

You had to remove and reinstall the fuel lines at the pump fittings to put on your rebuilt pump. It sounds like you disturbed some debris in those threads. The debris is now lodged in your carburetor needle-and-seat. It's keeping the inlet orifice from sealing when the float says "stop the gas".

I'm sure you wouldn't use carb-clogging teflon tape, but did you remember to clean all the fitting threads of grime?

I'd have to agree with Jerry, assuming you haven't got an in-line fuel filter between the pump and carb. It doesn't take much dreck to keep the needles from seating. Clean the bowls completely, and blow out the fuel pump to carb line with compressed air.

Re: Problems after Fuel Pump Rebuild

Didn't use any tape but I did use a dab of sealant on the fuel line threads at the pump. It sat for 24 hours before gas touched anything so I figured everything would have cured. Maybe a bad assumption. The car does have the fuel filter canister right before the carb but I didn't touch it, even though it looks very old. It might not be doing its job anymore. This morning I cranked it up and drove around the block, ran perfect. I'm sure you guys are right with your diagnosis and perhaps whatever piece of junk was in there has passed. I'm going to take it out for 10 miles at highway speed to get some flow volume running thru the carb and hopefully it will clean up any small particles out of the system. I'll keep you posted. Thanks a ton, David

                    Evidently not...

if the car sat for 24 hours and runs fine now. Story of my life. Proves once again that if you wait long enough, problems disappear

Took her on the highway for 30 minutes of 65-70 mph. Ran fine and is running perfect now. Whatever was in there, it passed like a gall stone. Thanks to all!

never use silicone sealer in any place there is gasoline as it will dissolve in gas.

It wasn't silicone, but I probably didn't need any type regardless. David
