I have a set of 8 NOS in the original box pistons GM # 3799494. I believe these are listed as 0.30 over 62-68 327 pistons. The boxes have never been opened.
Questions?
Are these forged or cast pistons?
What amount of value ($'s) would this set of pistons have?
Yes, GM #3799494 are just what you think they are----+.030 pistons for 1962 to 1968 327 applications. These pistons are for 250 hp and 300 hp Corvette applications as well as other 327 Chevrolet applications up to 300 hp. They are conventional, permanent mold cast pistons.
How much are they worth? Hard to say. Theoretically and rationally, they shouldn't be worth any more than a current replacement set of similar pistons as manufactured by Federal-Mogul, Silvolite, etc. Such a set of pistons is worth about $200, maximum. Plus, when you consider that a set of hypereutectic cast, which are WAY stronger than these pistons (and, should be a lot more desirable), sells for about $300, maximum, for a 327, that should really limit the value of the older pistons.
However, I saw an NOS set of GM #3864881 327 small journal connecting rods sell recently on eBay for almost $500. When you consider that one could buy a set of FAR superior aftermarket rods for about that much, it goes to show just how much some folks will pay for "original" parts. It's dumb, but they do it.
