i know alot of you will think this is stupid but i have to ask. looking at the engine from the front of car, does the engine turn clock wise? i am very rusty and tired. after i wired the car i bumped the starter and the timing line went to the right (clock wise) for some reason i expected it to go the other way so i thought i would ask. also it the timing plate painted? it is very hard to read
The tab is painted along with the rest of the engine. But years of grime and coats of paint can obliterate the timing marks. Get a white crayon and wipe it on the tab to give your eyes half a chance of seeing the marks!
Just put the trans in fourth (assuming a manual trans) and push the car with the top of the front tire. Easy to precisely move the timing mark. If you have an automatic..........nevermind.
