    Fuel Tank Install

    I'm installing a brand new Quantas Fuel Tank in our 67 Coupe. The old Tank needed to be replaced due to protective coating disintegrating due to Ethanol. It ruined the Carb. and coated everything else. The AIM and the Judging Guide do not offer any "details" as to installing it. Other than Strap Pads and cushion material where Tank rests on Chassis is there anything else? Judging info? Thanks, Al W.

    They are a pretty straightforward installation. Watch as you take the old one out, reverse to install the new one.

    I don't know what the pads on the '67 should look like, but on some cars, they look like thick tarpaper (roofing felt). I've taken some roofing felt, laid it two layers thick, and put the tank in. After a bit of wear, you never know the difference.

      Like Chris, When I pulled the tank out of my 66 I used standard roofing felt, doubled over for the pads. Worked well. The biggest problem was getting the bolts on the straps reconnected. Someone here suggested using very long bolts, tightening it down until the straps re-conformed, and then installing the standard/original bolts. It should work.

        Thanks Guys, your input helps me! I've owned this car since 1973 and just am amazed by the Frenzy that has occurred around these vehicles. Yes it's still enjoyable but the money part is discouraging. It was alot more fun when you could do what you wanted without worry or after thought. JMHO Al W.

          Hi Allan:

          When I installed my tank, the biggest headache was getting the gas filler neck centered in the body opening. If you are re-using your original tank straps and the tank was centered to start with, you should be okay. The repro tank straps are made of thicker metal and they resist taking a "set" as is needed when the straps are tightened.

          A trick that helped me was to use wood blocks to hold the tank in position as I tightened the straps. I also used some 1x3 boards as levers to adjust the position of the tank as the straps were tightened.

            Also, duplicate the locally deformed areas in the weld seam flange where the straps pass by in the front and rear of the tank; I don't think the repro tanks have the seam flange bent at those four locations, and it makes attaching the straps and centering the filler neck in the body opening extremely difficult.

              Interesting information. I'll post results when I get to reinstalling the new Tank. Right now I'm soaking the inside of the Fuel Line with Alcohol in an attempt to remove the "Protecting Coating" that the Ethanol dissolved in the Tank and transposed throughout my Fuel System. I'll be ordering a new Tank Neck Boot and drain line from LICS in the AM. Thanks to All, Al W.
