    Speedometer colored gear

I am looking for the correct colored gear or number of teeth for my 69 427/390, 4 speed, 3:08 gears. the one that is in there is 22 tooth green. The speedo seams 12-16 mph slow.Or can someone tell me were to look.
I have looked in the AIM, but could not find.

The 22 tooth gear is for a 3;73 rear end, you need an 18 tooth gear, I believe it is brown.

You've got a real problem here. Someone must have changed the transmission or, at least, the speedometer DRIVE gear at some point. The DRIVE gear is the gear completely internal to the transmission and installed on the main shaft. The 22 tooth green DRIVEN gear is the smallest tooth count gear that can be used with the DRIVE gear that is, apparently, installed in your tranmission.

Assuming that you have tires that are near original OD, you require a BROWN, 18 tooth DRIVEN gear or, possibly, a "NATURAL", 19 tooth DRIVEN gear. Unfortunately, you can't install either of these gears with the DRIVE gear you currently have installed. So, your options are as follows:

      1) Remove the transmission form the car, remove the extension housing, and change the DRIVE gear. Assuming that the transmission is an original 1969 Muncie with all original internal parts (or, any 1968-70 Muncie with all original internal parts), you require speedometer DRIVE gear GM #6261794. This is a NYLON DRIVE gear that is retained to the shaft by a special clip GM #1373122.

      2) Retain your existing DRIVE gear and install a speedometer adapter. Selecting and fitting the proper adapter is best left to a speedometer shop. A GM #15635469 adapter MIGHT get you close, but these adapters are very expensive things to be "purchasing and experimenting with". Plus, you might need a different configuration adapter to work with your existing speedometer cable length.

          Paul,

          What size are your tires?
          What diameter?
