I started up my 55 in my garage yesterday, and the car started to move when it was still in park. I moved the lever a little, and it was back in park. When it started to move, the shift lever was jumping around like it wasn't in the correct position. I then drove the car for about thirty minutes with no problems. When I initally installed the lever and linkage I had a dificult time getting it adjusted correct. Does anyone have any experience with this, and how did they adjust the linkage?

Re: 1955 transmission shift linkage adjustment
Hmmm... Do you need to move the lever to the left to get it out of park? I do. Also reverse.
There is a pretty good illustration of the iron powerglide shift and downshift linkage on p.102 of Chilton's 53-62 Corvette manual. The shift lever shown is the later style, but the rest is pretty accurate. The linkage is adjusted by the trunnion on the end of the rod, IIRC.- Top

Re: 1955 transmission shift linkage adjustment
Thanks for the response. Yes, I have to move the lever to the left to move it forward, but the transmission is going into drive with it in the park position. It may not be going in park far enough to keep it in gear, but I just have the shifter adjusted so that it is in the park position. There isn't very much adjustment left.- Top

Re: 1955 transmission shift linkage adjustment
I had a similar problem. When I put the shift lever in the park position it would not hold the car from moving on the slightest incline. When the car started to roll the shift lever would vibrate. The linkage for the park pawl needed to be adjusted so it full engaged when the shift lever was placed in the park position.
What happens when you put the shift lever in neutral? With your foot on the brake can you rev the engine without the car trying to move?Bob- Top

Did you have much trouble adjusting the park pawl? I was almost to the end of the adjustment rod the last time I adjusted it. It does OK in neutral. The car doesn't try to move.- Top

Re: 1955 transmission shift linkage adjustment
That's good news that the car doesn't move in neutral. Also means it can't be in drive when in the shift lever is in park.
Its been at least three years since I adjusted mine, and I'm not 100% sure of everything I did. If I recall correctly, I disconnected the gear lever rod from the trans flange and put the shift lever in park. Making sure the rod for the park pawl was fully engaged. I had the on safety stands and the rear wheel off the ground. By trying to turm the drive shaft I was able to confirm the trans was securly in park. Then I adjusted the gear shift lever so it connected to the gear flange neutral/park position.
If you move the lingage around before you diconnect anything you will probably understand what I'm trying to discribe. I think I recall the gear shift flange on the trans has indents so you can feel the different positions.Bob- Top

Re: 1955 transmission shift linkage adjustment
Success! Well I put the car on jack stands and adjusted the transmission linkage. I removed the link from the shaft on the transmission. The shaft and linkage are splined, and I just re-oriented the link so that the shaft rotated more to the park position. I then readjusted the threated link, and the park position switch. It seems to be working fine now.
Thanks for the help,
