    Help! replacing Diff. Mount rubber

    This is for an '81..
I started out this morning to replace my shocks and the rubber puck that go between the frame and the front mount of the differential. Hours later, haven't gotten the old puck out yet. The problem seems to have interrelated reasons:

    1) I can't pry the front of the differential down more than maybe 1/2", as the diff. yoke will eventually hit the frame.

    2) Just in front of the cast-in "tab" in the differential, where the front mount is, the frame angles down very sharply, so it looks like I would have to pry the front of the differential down 1" to maybe 1-1/2" to get the puck out. (note, I believe the earlier Vettes used a steel bracket bolted onto the differential and the front mount/puck rode on this bracket, so you could just loosen the bracket to do this job. Not the case w/ the '81. Instead of a bolt-on bracket, the differential has a big "tab" cast into it in the front and the mount/puck mounts directly to that.)

I did remove the driveshaft to get more room for this operation. Also, when I was having little success, I also unbolted the two mounts where the differential crossmember mounts to the frame. This allowed the back-end of the differential to drop a couple of inches before the trailing arms bottomed out. This helped out the tension on the front mount, but I still can't pry the front down enough because of the problems mentioned above.

Any ideas? I'm starting to think that the only way to do this job on an '81 is to drop the rear-end completely. What a pain!
Thanks in advance for any suggestion! I'm at my wits end ;-)

    John-----

I've never done this operation on an 80-82 with the aluminum differential and crossmember. However, I am familiar with the configuration of the differential support bracket which is a cast-in part of the differential carrier.

Have you consulted a 1981 Corvette Factory Shop Manual?

      Joe,
I have a Shop Manual for 66 - 82, but it doesn't talk specifically about replacing the rubber mount cushion. More importantly, all of the pictures and instructions are for early models that have the bolt-on bracket, instead of the cast-in flange. So, the manual isn't much help in this case. It looks like the differential needs to go rearward, then down, so unless I'm missing something (and I'm hoping I am and someone can tell me the easier way) I think I'll have to disconnect the spring from the spindles, which will let me pull the differential around wherever I want. Other ideas?
      Thanks!

        John-----

What you are describing is EXACTLY the problem with the more-or-less "generic" Corvette service manuals. You really need a YEAR SPECIFIC factory service manual. By "factory" I am referring to the manual prepared by General Motors and published by Helm, Inc. I believe that copies of this manual are available through the NCRS bookstore section of this web-site. With ANY Corvette one absolutely must have the following:

        1) The YEAR-SPECIFIC factory service manual, and;

        2) The YEAR-SPECIFIC AIM

Everything else is supplemental to the above.

          John,

Besides the bolt, there is a steel sleeve that runs through the upper rubber, differential hole and lower rubber. It has a large washer on top. With the drive shaft loose and pushed forward remove the bolt then the sleeve. The rubber may be stuck to the sleeve so it may take some effort to remove the sleeve out the top. With the sleeve out of the way both upper and lower rubber should come out.
