While the year is not coded into the stamping, it can be determined by observing the casting date found on the carrier case. The last digit of that sequence represents the last digit of the year. While the same casting was used for more than 10 years (i.e. so there are "repeats" of some "years"), the stamped coding was different for those "repeat" years, so the actual year can be easily discerned. Some of the later cases may even have had some 2 digit year codes; I don't recall, for sure.
