    Electrical wire wrapping question

    Hello All,

When wrapping electrical wiring in the engine bay with that non-stick tape, is there a certain way one ties off the ends?

    Thanks for the help.

    Regards,
    Kurt N.

    Re: Electrical wire wrapping question

Most of the time, I have observed it was a simple pull through knot. Simply loop it under itself and pull tight, then cut it off with about 1 inch. Starting is different. Typically, I make a loop with some string and put the end in the loop. Start wrapping over the loop and then pull then end through once you have wrapped about 6 inches down the harness. I believe originally they would just simply use a small cut piece of wrap to do the same thing. Study each intersection and try to duplicate the effect of the wrap. I think it is one of the funner things to do. Terry

Terry's response is exactly correct, an operator would start at the large end of the harness with a flap of tape, and hold onto the flap until it was secured with a couple of wraps of tape, then tape to the small end. There was a tool to make the knot, but manu of the operators preferred to use their fingers to make the knot with similar results, and either method about an inch or less of tape free past the knot.

I thought about it somemore. For the particular person. Make sure you use the correct width tape and wrap in the correct direction and rotion. Never know who might be looking :0

Correct tape is 1 inch wide .007 thick black vinyl without adhesive, and the vast majority of the tape application operators were right handed, and held the harness in the left hand to provide tension if the branch was not restrained on the build fixture.

Most lefties wound up on the "build" stations, stringing wire. There were more build than tape stations, and all were the same job classification and pay rate so it wasn't really a problem. On a small harness, or a low volume single person build station it wouldn't really matter which direction it was taped from, but all the fixtures were set up to tape from left to right, and the knot tying appliances were all right-handed.
