    Rust on Engine Pad.

I have a problem with rust developing on the engine pad of my '71 roadster. In the past, I have always put a thin coat of oil on the pad. However, I neglected to take of care of it recently. I now have a fair amount of rust buildup on the pad. I can still see the numbers but I don't know how to remove the rust safely without compromising the integrity of the numbers and broach marks. Can anyone suggest an answer to this problem? Thanks

Try a Scotchbrite pad and toothbrush wetted with mineral spirits or paint thinner.

Once it's clean keep a film of WD-40 on the pad. Motor oil will collect dirt.

      Frank,

Eagle brand "etching forumula" mag wheel cleaner will remove the rust with no effect on the originality of the broach marks. Oil it afterwards, as you previously did.

          Duke & Frank,
I will disagree with the use of the Scotchbrite pad. The broach marks may be faint enough that a ScotchBrite pad may be too aggressive and result in unwanted scrathces that obliterate the marks. I would start with Simple Green and a rag. Starting with the least aggressive technique and go up from there. Once you wind up with a clean pad, use PreLube 6 from Quanta Products to keep your pad clean.

Try Corrosion-X. Put it on the pad for a few days and you will be able to wipe the surface rust off with a rag leaving the markings untouched. The Corrosion-X will get underneath the rust while penetrating into the metal to form a protective barrier. Use this and your problem will be gone.

No kidding try the works toilet bowl cleaner it will remove the rust and wont harm anything else ,put some on a rag and rub it , then why not clear coat it untill you show your car, and then remove the clear with thinner, if you dont want to spray the clear ,spray a little in the cap and use a Q tip and apply it that way.
