    75 block No.

I need some help. I know the block in my 75 is not the original. However I am having a problem getting the right length dipstick and tube. I am hoping one of you regulars will be able to straighten this out for me. The Nos. are as follows.

    Casting No.3970010

    Cast date D155

    Block Stamp V0418 TYZ

    Serial No. C55160571

Thanks in advance for any help.

The engine originally resided in a 1975 truck with automatic transmission, probably assembled at the Southgate, CA assembly plant. It does have the correct casting number for your car and may even have a correct casting date, depending upon the build date of your car. The block was cast on April 15, 1975 and the engine assembled on April 18.

Thanks Joe. The dates are close for my serial no. Maybe with your help I can get a correct oil dipstick and tube. This is just my driver but I would like to have the dipstick read properly. Thanks again I am always amazed how much you and some of the other regulars know.

        Mike-----

As far as dipstick is concerned, by a stroke of good luck, the 1975 truck and 1975 Corvette applications used an oil pan of the same configuration. So, whether the engine has the truck oil pan or the Corvette oil pan from the original engine in your car will make no difference. Even though L-82's (if that's what you engine was originally) used different internal baffling, the configuration of the oil pan (and required dipstick/tube) are the same.

What you need to tell me is what the measurement is of your dipstick tube, measuring from the collar at the base to the very upper end of the tube. Then, I can tell you what dipstick you require.

The tube I have in the car appears to have been modified to clear the power brake booster. However I will get a measurement tonight and get back to you.

            Joe:

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, had to go out of town on co. business. I measured the tube it is 63/4" long and has a radius. However, It definately has been cut to allow dipstick clear booster. It looks as if the tube should be angled forward towards front of engine to clear. Do you know if that is correct. The dipstick looks to be right per the vendors catalogs and I was able to verify the length as correct to club members 75.
