    Posi Problem

I have a very early posi rear in my '57. Upon removal and dissassembly I found the spider gear shafts fractured and the spiders chewed up pretty well. The cups the side gears sit in are also showing some galling on the edges where the spider gears run. I spoke with Tom at Tom's rear ends and he said there were an early and late version of this posi carrier, mine is the early. He said the parts are non-existant for this carrier and a 4 series carrier for the rear end is also very hard if not impossible to find. The has the original 4.11 posi rear in it and I wanted to preserve as much of the drivetrain as possible. Could anyone on the board recommend an alternate source for very early or hard to find GM differential parts? What about having the shafts machined from scratch?

You can have the shafts machined. The problem is what material and they must be tempered. This can all be overcome if you can find the specifications.

I'm not sure how much would be gained given other problem parts.

If you are determined to keep the original carrier keep looking for NOS or good condition used parts.

          Don -

Eaton now makes new Posi units specifically for the '57-up C-1 center sections.

            John,
Are the new center sections like the later design posi units? Do you know if the old ring and pinion set will exchange?

              Don -

Yes, they're the current Eaton design, and will accept your ring and pinion. Nobody has parts for the original Dana ramp-and-roller posi units.
