    small block casting numbers

I had the 327-300 motor in my '67 roadster rebuilt several years ago, shortly after I bought it, but tragically well in advance of joining the NCRS and discovering what a 'decked block' is. I've since inspected the block pad where the casting # resides, and can faintly make out the appropriate numbers. I say 'appropriate' because they match the numbers on my Protect-O-Plate, and my old Top Flight judging sheets. The pad was painted, along with the block pad (which I now know is a no-no) further comprimising the legibility of these numbers by partially filling them with paint. I'm trying to figure out whether
these are the orignally stamped numbers, shaved to within microns of their very existance by the machinist who rebuilt the motor, or if they have been re-stamped. I don't know what the original factory numeral and character fonts and sizes looked like, so I can't compare the font and size of my numbers to original numbers.

Does anyone have a photo of an "untouched" block pad from a '67 327-300 they could send me?

    Thanks sincerely for the consideration.
    Best Regards, Keith

Here's a photo of my original 327/300 hp pad just before I rebuilt the engine. Good luck.

        Hi Keith:

Just to help you get the terms straight, the casting number appears on the bell housing flange on the driver's side, and looks like the attached photo. The casting date appears in the same area on the passenger side. Together these two are worth 262 of the 350 points assigned to the block. Presumably these two numbers are just fine on your block.

The two numbers stamped on the pad are the "VIN derivative" that includes part of the car's serial number, and the engine assembly code that indicates what horsepower the engine is and what date the engine was assembled.

These two numbers are worth 25 points each, and if they are still legible some judges may give you the 50 points. What you won't have on your pad are the original "broach marks" left by the machine that originally surfaced the block. That will cost you 38 points.

I think things may not be as bad as you originally feared.
