Re: Still confused about adjusting hydraulic lifte

Check these lifters out on ebay. This is sort of where some of this started for me. Note the strong retainers. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SBC-B...98614980QQrdZ1

I appreciate your explanation. Thanks, Terry

A lot of $$$ is spent by those who don't know

When I worked at the speed shop 20+ years ago, I saw TONS of money thrown away every day by those who didn't understand the problem. For a stock type engine running in the stock RPM range, it's a TOTAL waste of your money to get "special" lifters. In addition, some of these lifters are like the old "Rhodes" lifters and will make a ticking noise at idle when the oil pressure drops. Then the speed shop owner will convince you that you need a high volume, high pressure oil pump to keep the pressure up (and increase spark scatter and distributor wear due to higher than stock loading and lose horsepower to turn the pump....). Then your oil pressure will be too high and when you go for NCRS judging, they will still hear the lifters clacking and ding you on the "too high" oil pressure too. Then at high RPM, the high volume pump will suck more oil out of your stock volume pan - another trip to the speed shop for a "special" high volume pan - now you get the idea!

Just stick with a TOTALLY stock combo that has been proven to work, unless you are willing to spend a lot of time and frustration dealing with the little glitches that seem to keep popping up when you substitute "racing" parts. If they were so great, why didn't the factory just use them?

Re: A lot of $$$ is spent by those who don't know

Well, the transfer of WISDOM is slowly becoming complete . All the right comments. I don't think I will get anywhere near to point of justifying any special adjustments to my lifters or using special lifters. I look forward to installing the original camshaft and a nice set of NOS lifters or stock replacement lifters. I have no desire to add a high volume or high pressure oil pump to the equation. Thank you for the though out comments, Terry
