Re: 1992 Center Storage Console Light
Thanks Jim for your response. Can anyone tell me where to find the sensor and how to by pass it like Jim has described? I believe my problem is power is not getting to the bulb at the bulb's socket. I don't know how to troubleshoot how to get power to it. Thanks, John Marsico- Top

Re: 1992 Center Storage Console Light
John,
I just checked my '92 console door to see what might be going on in your case. I also poured over the Helm's factory repair manual for the car.
First thing, the console courtesy light is fed from the same 15 amp courtesy fuse that all of the interior lights are fed from so if any or all of those work when you open the door then you know that it is not the fuse.
Unfortunately the manual makes no distinction as to where the switch might reside. There is no apparent plunger but it might be hidden inside the console and triggered by a hidden finger, or it might be a mercury type switch. In any case my guess would be that the wire that feeds the light (it is tucked in the rear corner on the hinge side) got pinched or simply broke inside of the insulation from metal fatigue after repeated use. There is a plug connection on the wire between the door and console so if you are lucky maybe the plug simply came disconnected. You need to dig around a bit to find it. Everything is jammed in that right rear corner.
Before you get too crazy first check that you have voltage at the bulb socket (you should have a 12 volt meter or test light). If there is no voltage there (and the other courtesy lights work) when the console door is open then you should suspect a broken wire which means digging down and removing the console. I removed a C-4 console once and I am by no means an expert. By the manual it appears that the console trim plate around the gear selector has to be removed first, permitting access to hidden screws that hold it down. That is all a big PITA so if I were you I'd find that plug connection and check if you have power on the console side of the plug. That would tell you that the failure is downstream on the door wire side -a lucky break. If that is the case remove the door and perform some bench surgery by replacing the bad section of wire. Otherwise I am afraid that you might have to remove the console to fix it.
Hope this helps. Let me know how you make out.
