    Cleaning inside of differential

    Hello all,
What would be the best method and material to clean the inside of my differential. I have a '72. Differential is out and I have the back cover off. I would like to clean the old lubricant out and check for wear of components.

Lastly, my top leaf on my leaf spring is broken. Any suggestions on best place to buy just the top leaf, looking for an original?

    Thank you,
    Brandon

    Brandon,

You could use B-12 Carburetor cleaner in the spray can to clean the old grease. Also kerosene or other solvents will work. Be sure to use in a well ventilated place. It is difficult to cut the accumulated "stuff" in the bottom in particular. Use an old toothbrush or a small brass brush to help loosen it up. This is during and after applying what ever solvent you are using.

Before you start cleaning, use something to gather a sample from the bottom gunk (highly technical term) and examine it for metal particles. There will normally be very fine particles, look for something large enough to see individual particles.

You can call Corvette vendors and ask about a used spring, also do a Google search for Corvette salvage yards and call them.

    Good luck,

    Verle

      Verle,
Thank you. I was thinking of using something like kerosene but didn't know if that would cause problems. I think I will use that and follow up with the Carb cleaner.

Great suggestion on the metal particles. I would not have done that. Thank you.

      All the best.

You want to be careful you don't get anything in the bearings. If you plan on removing the cast (not recommended) then witness mark the bearing caps.

Use some brake cleaner that will cut the oil good. Rotate the case and spray the "windows" and cross shaft hole with the brake cleaner. Look to see if it stays wet in any cracks after the surface drys. You don't want any cracks.

Your 72 has an Eaton posi case, 10-17 spiders, and slotted "snowflake" clutches- not too good. It's not uncommon to find them broken.
