    Tach Question

I just purchased a 1972 coupe. The car has 51,000 original miles and runs great. I noticed that as the car warms up, the tachometer begins to bounce. After a short while it just bounces between 0-10 rpm. It is not reflective at all of what the engine is doing. Any hints as to what the problem might be?

    Mathew,

My guess is that this "bounce" you describe is the tach's cry for some TLC help before more problems arise. All that may be required is that you pull the tach from the car, remove the side gear and main shaft, and clean and inspect the cross gear and main gear. Then reassemble them with some fresh high pressure grease and install the tach back in the car. A bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way.

      Mathew,

I'm sure Tony is right, but I had a similar condition in my '67 BB until I removed the cable and relubed it with a lithium grease befroe sliding it back in and screwing it back on the tach.

However, I'm not too familiar with the tach setup on '72s (oh hell, I'll be honest - I don't know my a$$ from a burnt biscuit), but if it's mechanical, lubing the cable would be my first step.

90% of the time its the cable and one of two things is causing the problem. Cable housing is kinked, too tight a turn and/or the lube has caked and is causing a dragging problem, which cause the bounce. The same thing will happen to a speedometer. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but all tachs were mechanical up through 1974. 1975 and newer are electronic. I believe the cable will only come out at the gauge end, the same as a speedometer. Buy yourself a can of lubriplate lubricant, Chevy part# 1050110(its an all purpose white lubricant which was used on the hinges and latches of doors, hood, convertable top assemblies and, on your Corvette, the wiper door. While your in the distributor, put a small amount of the rub block of your points and if the foam block (mounted on a post to assist lubing the rub block of the points)give it a little. One more thing, while your under the dash, pull the speedo cable clean it and give it a good coat. Sorry if I seem to be telling how to care for your Corvette. But to me there is no other American Sports car, so lets take care of what we have. Save the wave, Ray
