    64 Differential Noise

When coasting to a stop, with the clutch in, we can hear a clunking noise coming from the differential. We have replaced the wheel bearings, and the half shaft u-joints.Our carrier is marked "CA" and we assume this is not a positraction unit. There is also a 2" disc bolted to the rear cover but we can not make out any markings on it.Mileage is 44,000.Any suggestions? Thanks Don # 31753.

    Check out...

Bill Cody's "Rearend woes are gone" thread, 2 June, 12:15 PM, below. To determine if it's positraction, jack up one side of the rear, and with the parking brake off and the DIAGONALLY OPPOSITE FRONT TIRE SECURELY CHOCKED ON BOTH SIDES, rotate the tire. If it rotates without too much resistance it is not a posi, or the posi is worn and ineffective. Another way to check it to turn the wheel by a lug bolt with a torque wrench, A posi in good condtion should take at least 35-40 foot pounds before the wheel breaks loose and rotates.

      Re: 64 Differential Noise

My '63 has a CA differential with the round tag and it is a 3.36 and NOT positraction. There is no marking on the metal tag, it's round shape was it's identification. Of course it's always possible that someone added positraction at a later time.
