        13867 (138)= SS396 (67)= Convertible configuration. Very valuable now thanks to B-Jackson auctions.

            Jay, I don't know where you got your information, but 138 done NOT = SS396.

            13867 is strictly a BODY code, it had nothing to do with engine configuration.

            13 stands for Chevelle, I don't recall off hand what the 8 stood for and I'm not at home to look it up, and 67 does stand for convertible.

            Maybe John Hinckley will chime in with what the 8 stood for.

              I own an Org. One owner 36yrs. 1967 13867 code SS 396 Convertible 4-speed, Buckets. (All paper, Build sheet) Unique looks like IBM punch card (can't Fake em.) Look up Team Chevelle the 136 code is for Malibu. 138 IS the conatation for SS 396 Super Sports. 138 code ragtop and hardtop 138 code is in the Vin. number and trim tag. as well. Thats why they say a True Super Sport, 138 Code. When people advt. these cars for sale.

                Well Jay, I guess you know more than I do, I only worked at Chevrolet Engineering for 37+ years. We used these codes every day.

                Trust me, 13867 is ONLY a BODY style code and has NOTHING TO DO WITH ENGINE SIZE,HP,CI,ETC.

                  Yeah well The NCRS types told me 5 yrs ago. I was Full of s--- in regards to my GM styling car created/owned by Rosenberger. Now turns out it is what it is. So I guess all conventional wisdom that states the 138 Code in Vin and body is 396 cars needs to be thown out as well . Seeing you worked at GM for 37 yrs. Me sooo dumbb. I'll stand down and just drive my alledged SS396.

                    Jay, I'm NOT saying that YOUR SS396 is an real deal SS396, I just trying to say that the body style codes were just that............body codes, NOT engine codes.

                    If you want to believe otherwise, I guess that's up to you.

                    Your GM styling car sounds interesting, how did you finally document it and prove them wrong?

                    Sincerely

                      The 64 Rosenberger Car was unique. 4 seater with over 13 different styling cues inc. elec style gas release door opening, retractible pass seats. Had 65 big block hood, N-41 date coded with discs date coded 64. Go figure. All body lines formed like the 65 big block hood in other words rounded. Spoke with Chuck Jordan, Noland Adams, Bob Clift, and the late Chip Miller. I just recently spoke with the restorer and an additional PR GM guy back in the day. Who may some addditional info with his archives. The restorer seemed a little more than enthuastic. It'll be brought out someday. Bascially car done up like the old Dr. No Aston Martin, a real engineering excerzise. No disrespect regading the 138 stuff. All the Best, Jay

                        Re: Chevelle numbers - Close, but no cigar

                        You almost have it right. Here's the shortened version, with a few "etc." thrown in since I don't want to retype a whole book.

                        Chevelle

                        13211 sdn, 2d, V8

                        etc.

                        Chevelle Malibu
                        =======================

                        13539 htp sdn, I6

                        etc.

                        13617 htp cpe, V8
                        13635 wgn 4d, V8
                        13639 htp sdn, V8
                        13667 conv cpe, V8
                        13669 sdn 4d, V8

                        Chevelle Malibu SS, V8
                        =======================
                        13817 htp cpe, V8
                        13867 conv cpe, V8

                        You can see that Model 131xx is the 6 cyl Chevelle, 132xx is the V8 Chevelle, 135xx is the 6 cyl Malibu, 136xx is the V8 Malibu, and 138xx is the V8 Chevelle Malibu SS.

                        Model 13817 and Model 13867 are the Chevelle Malibu SS models with a V8 engine. Now why you can say it is an SS396 is that the 325 hp 396 was the standard engine in the 13867 model. The SS only came in 1966 with the 325 hp, 360 hp, and 375 hp versions of the 396. So this number only proves it was a 396, but not whether it was a 325 hp, 360 hp, or 375 hp.

                        If like in later years, a small block had been an SS engine option, then you couldn't say it is a 396.

                        These are model numbers only. The reason you can say what cubic inch displacement is because that was the only one in that model.

                            That lays it out. On 67 SS 396 convertibles you could only get a 325 or 350Hp version As the 375hp was regulated to the 612 hardtops built. The suffix will tell you the Hp rating ED, EG for 375HP etc. Thanks

                              Ditto that.

                              In 66 & 67 an SS only came with a 396. Period.
