After I told him it was a 265, he wasn't interested any more. He never did tell me the number. I'd like to know now too. If he has the cast number I will post it. Thanks for everybody's help.>George

According to my book that is a 56 265 motor. Is there a casting date? It is usually at the top rear of the block.

I beleive Joe is correct.Only corvette stamped the vin number on the front pad.I also think you are going to find that all 283 cu. engines from 57 through at least 62 are going to have the same casting number. The 62 was the first year for the 327 and the corvette had a different casting number than the passenger car.
Look for the casting number and casting date on the bellhousing flange and this should answer alot of questio's.

Late 61 283 casting number changed--as per the judging manual.
