    C1 Differential

I understand that a series 3 carrier handles up to a 3.73 gear and the series 4 carrier uses 4.11 and higher gears.
How can I tell the difference between the carriers if there is no ring and pinion present?
Can spacers be used to put a 3.36 in a series 4 carrier?
    Thanks in advance.

    Bruce,

You can use a 4.11 and higher numerical ratio on a 3 series carrier with a spacer. The reverse is not true. The 4 series carrier places the ring gear closer to the pinion.

You can tell the difference between a 3 series and 4 series carrier by measuring the distance from the bearing to the ring gear face but I don't have the measurement handy. Maybe someone else can supply that number, or the casting numbers.

Hi Verle - If the carrier is out, I think that there are some numbers stamped on the unit (not the ring/pinion). I believe C-30743X for the series 3; and C-30751 for the series 4. Another check is the series 3 ring gear mounting flange is beveled, where the series 4 flange is square across. Found that in some notes after talking to Darrell and Werner once. Regards, Dick
