    68 C3 - Insulation above gas tank?

I have checked the archives and cannot locate an answer. I recently removed the gas tank from my '68. Above the tank there was yellow insulation shoved in between the tank and the body of the vehicle. Was this original? The insualtion was in very poor shape and fell apart as I removed it. Should I replace it with new insulation when I re-install the new gas tank? Thanks for any replies.

Michael ... Doon't believe it's original. Must have been either owner inspired or introduced by some repair shop. Has the rear end ever been damaged in an accident?

Kent, very perceptive. Although I don't think the the tank has ever been out of the car (or at least for a very long time), I have long suspected that the rear was damaged at some point in the past prior to me being the owner. I wonder what purpose they thought the insulation would serve.

According to the assembly manual (UPC8, B1) item number 3792599, Anti-squeak was cancelled early in the build year. This item was attached with an adhesive cement, which was also cancelled.

If you have an early build car, you may have the remnants of this item ... ???
(Maybe someone with a item number book can further describe 3792599)

          Just a SWAG

Knowing all the alien materials utilized on my '54 to repair headlight-to-grille fiberglass areas, I would suspect any repairs done in the late 50s to mid 60s unless they were accomplished at reputable shops. Bubba had many employers back then and still appears frequently today. Of course, I could be wrong and you might have sound-proofing of the very earliest '68s as another poster suggested in this thread ... who knows for certain???
