    1969 Headrest Removal

I have a 1969 convertible with an October build date. The seat covers are in great shape but the foam has started to degrade with foam powder in all the seat seam and be hind the seats. Can anyone provide information on the removal of the headrest? It appears that there is a tab on the headrest support that slides in the housing within the seat, that will allow the headrest to rise up only so far. Thanks in advance for any helpful hints.

    Steve,

The headrest pulls out. You may need to pull it towards the (passenger?) side to get it past the tab.

      Steve,
You might try sliding a hacksaw blade or a similar tool into the headrest slot, on the front side of the headrest bar, with the headrest all the way up and slowly slid the headrest and the tool down as far as you can. Hold the blade/tool down and pull up on the headrest. It should come out. You may have to do this more then one time. The blade/tool should be about 12" long to release the "clip" at the bottom of the headrest slide. You can purchase a headrest removal tool through K-D tools. I hope this helps if you haven't gotten it yet. Mike D

        Mike,

I didn't know there was a tool for this purpose. Mine were loose enough that they slid out with some effort and tension applied to one side, but your method sounds much better.

Some of the GM headrests came out without the use of a tool. Also, on some GM headrests you had to slide a smaller width tool/trimmed width blade down the right or left side (can,t remember) of the headrest post which will "by pass" the clip on the side. A hacksaw blade works well but BECARFUL the teeth do not cut the mounting plate/plastic. You can grind the teeth off if you have a bench grinder. Mike D
