C2 Transmission Decode

Hi,

I would appreciate any help decoding these numbers off of a '63 roadster transmission. Thanks in advance.

Housing number: 3831704
Side Cover: 3831707
Brass Tag bolted on side cover: 3831701
Tail Shaft: 3831731

Randy, I'd be happy to help, just to make it easy.

Is it a BW T10 or a Munsey? Also, is there anything stamped on the underside between the main case and the tail?

It is a Muncie transmission. I do not have any other numbers except for the ones listed.

If I read everything correctly, 3831704 and 3831731 indicate an M21 close ratio for 1963. If you believe it original to the car the engine should be 340 or 360 hp. Also, a VIN derivative should be stamped into the bottom between the main case and tail. In the same location there should also be a set of numbers that follow the letter P that identify the build date.

The 3831701 tag also says close ratio.

I can't find the wide ratio trans numbers, but if the tag is original to the trans then I would tend to believe it is a real close ratio trans.

Check for the other numbers punched into the trans as well as casting dates.

Thanks for the help. The engine is a 327/340. I'll see if I can get more numbers and verify the build date.

I got those numbers:

0718 and 3120654 (matches the VIN)

Can someone tell me the difference between the close ratio and real close ratio. I can't find the option code for it. Thanks.

Randy, in 63 there was no option as I recall. You got a wide ration with 250 and 300hp and a close ratio with a 340 and 360hp. If you need the gearing I'll look that up later.

I'm not sure what you mean when you ask for the difference between a real close ration and a close ratio???
