Here is electrical problem that I would like to have some help with. I am trying to get my horn relay alarm buzzer to work. It is the one were if you leave the key in the ignition and open the door, a buzzer will go off in the horn relay out in the engine compartment. I have replaced the horn relay with a unit from John Prikle, the ignition switch and the key lock with no luck of having the alarm work. I have by passed the key and ran a groundline to the middle terminal of the ignition switch and the horn relay does work. Appreciate any ideas you might have to get this buzzer working. Thanks!

Re: 1968 Horn Relay Alarm Buzzer
Dick,
I assure you that '68's have an alarm buzzer in the horn relay in the engine compartment for someone who leaves the key in the ignition and opens the door. It use to work but has not for about a year. That's why I'm asking for help.Terry Buchanan

Re: 1968 Horn Relay Alarm Buzzer
Dick,
In '68, the key minder alarm was used to remind the owner to take the keys in order to prevent auto theft.
Terry,
The key buzzer is controlled by the 3 spade connectors under the relay. I believe they are stamped as to which color wire goes to each lug.
In looking @ the wiring diagrams, The green wire goes to the horns. The black wire goes to the harness connector that mates with the turn signal switch & the pink wire connects to the ignition switch and is activated when the key is left in the off position but still inserted. The black ground wire must also be connected to the negative side of the relay.
If the 3 spades & ground are connected correctly, & none of the wires are broken or shorted, perhaps the actual ignition switch has gone bad?
Check the continuity of the black & pink wires & try a new or different ignition switch. Your current key & cylinder can be used with the new switch.
Good luck,

Re: 1968 Horn Relay Alarm Buzzer
I don't have the 1968 wiring diagram handy (and let's not get into the accuracy of the available diagrams. That subject has been beaten to death here already), but one of those wires at the horn relay has to somehow connect to the driver's side door switch. Now whether it connects to the switch at the front of the door jamb or the one at the rear in 1968, I don't know -- but there has to be a signal (or more likely a ground) to tell the relay the driver's door is open.
In the later C3s one of those switches (and I think it is the front one) has two wires going to it -- one of which is for the buzzer. The most common cause of failure of the buzzer to operate is a malfunctioning door switch -- corrosion is common. Check it out.Terry- Top
