    Differential cover

Where do they usally crack. Mine looks like it possibly has hair line cracks in the inside at the center of the cover.

Like Mike said where the spring mounts is where they crack. I have had several examples.I don't think what you are seeing is a crack, but you could have it x rayed if you want to make sure. I would not worry about it if it was mine. Tom

Do they crack from jacking under the rear end or from the pressure from the spring.

I think it was just a poor design. You can buy new ones that are reinforced at the ears.I do not know if G.M. replacements are reinforced or if they are still available. That would be a question for Joe Lucia.

            Jim -

They cracked from people (and dealer mechanics) fully-torquing the four spring plate bolts with the car still up in the air, in effect using those bolts to flatten the spring into its design ride height position. They didn't put the note in the Service Manual not to torque them until the car was on wheels until 1971. People still crack/break them that way every day, which gave rise to the aftermarket "heavy-duty" rear cover with gussets on those ears.
