    N14 Sidepipe Cover Temperature

How hot do the sidepipe covers get, e.g. idling in traffic, parades, etc. Reason: do I need hi-temp silver paint for the dull recessed areas of these covers, or can I use regular paint. Thanks.

Joe, The sidepipe covers get real warm at times. I would use the high temp stuff and not take any chances, unless you can't get the right finish.I really don't think it's nessasary to use high temp though.(doesn't get that hot!)

Thanks Bob. I have heard from some folks that they get very hot. I am going to use Hi Temp aluminum spray on the dull recessed areas. This is a very good match to the original. Eastwood has a product called "Diamond Clearcoat" specially formulated in hi gloss, for polished, unpainted surfaces. It is ordered, and should be coming tomorrow. If it tests OK, I will coat the polished ares with this. Otherwise, I will leave them bare, and clean them periodically with aluminum polish.

        Joe -

Did you remove the anodizing from the raised ribs on your covers? If so, how did you go about it, and are you satisfied with the results?

          Joe,

The midyear ones I've had (2) were never too hot to the touch. I'm wondering if the ones you've heard of that were had a poor (worn-out) set of the fiberglass inner linings. I think Bob is correct about the paint, but just like him, to be on the safe side the hi-temp would probably be the best bet. TBarr #24014

            Mike:

I first had the anodizing stripped off of the entire cover. Of course, I had to remove the insulators, and all remnants of paint, dirt, road tar, grease, etc. before having them stripped. I was then able to remove scratches, polish the raised areas, etc. I then sprayed the dull recesses as per NCRS specs. I will now clearcoat the polished areas (maybe).

This process is VERY labor intensive, but produced BEAUTIFUL results.

Another way to go after cleanup and polishing, is to mask off the satin areas using special material, have the polished areas "bright dipped", then re-anodize the entire cover. This is VERY EXPENSIVE. I did not get a price for this, but I believe that it may be cheaper in the long run to purchase new covers instead of going this route.

            Good luck.

              Tom:

Thanks for the reply. I have already sprayed the recesses with Hi-Temp Aluminum, which is an excellent match to the original. I now have to decide whether or not to clearcoat the polished areas, or leave them bare and CAREFULLY maintain them with aluminum polish (which will remove the aluminum paint if I am not careful).

I have looked at many of these covers at various shows, and see a fairly wide variation of color in the satin aluminum paint applied to the recessed ribs. Mine is on the grey-looking side, which provides excellent contrast to the polished sections.
