    '63-74 photo quiz

Where is this smokestack ? 60-90% of the Corvettes from about April 1963 to mid-1974 contained a major component manufactured / assembled here.

Picture taken about 5 days ago -- the plant is abandoned and dismantling is underway.

          You Nailed It, Tony

          Good one ! Home of the M20 / 21 / 22.

Now I have a question regarding the "Chevrolet" inscription on the stack: I would have expected to see "GM", as 4-speed Muncie transmissions were used in Buick, Olds, Pontiac, etc --- so why Chevrolet ?

P.S. on my way to Muncie, I passed through Anderson Indiana, source (I think) of our alternators and distributors that we fret so much about. How depressing to see all the abandoned and rusting manufacturing infrastructure. On the interstates, all you see is Hondas, Toyotas, etc. No wonder the Big 3" are hurting.

Muncie Transmission was a Chevrolet Manufacturing plant, although its product was supplied to other GM Divisions as well; very common situation throughout GM, still is today (but with different names).

                Anderson, IN was Delco Remy

                Starters too.

The very LAST Anderson plant, plant 20, still makes a few coils and ignition stuff, but it's closing very shortly. The "lemon drop" lunch counter is closed now too.

We are now in a world-wide economy.

                P. S. The small block engine plant in Flint? Now an empty field, except for a small new GM plant at the south end of the property.

Many other formerly busy sites in Flint... same story.
