55 Vette gas guage

... After installing a new wiring harness and gas sender I find that the gas guage (newly repaired) does not read the fuel level in the tank.. ie a full tank of gas reads very little above empty.. The wiring is good with no opens or unwanted grounds. The sender reads between 1.5 ohms in the empty position and 34 ohms in the full position.

Also when the tank was about half full the guage showed extremely little above the empty mark.

Does anyone have any insight as to what might be wrong so that the guage reads incorrectly.

Are you saying the resistance reading is OK on the bench, but stays at or near empty when installed in the tank? What kind of float is on the end of the rod?

bend a pice of coat hanger such that you can insert the coat hanger into the tank and grasp the float. then evaluate the gauge while yer buddy raises and lowers the float while yer observing the gauge. this will rule in or rule out the float/sending unit. mike

Make suer your float is not leaking. I had this with a new repro float resulting in the same finding...
