    C1 1962 "Major" Project

Sorry, long post but I'm really excited about this, and so is my son.....

This week I have acquired 1962 #483. This car is in very rough condition. Prior owner had it for 35 years(since 72), and it's been sitting for 11 years. I have it's 1972 title. I consider it somewhat of a barn find, because of the turn of events how I found it but that's another story. I had to have it when I discovered it has the original engine. After a few days of exploring the car I estimate 95% of the car is original, sad but original. I looked through the rusted frame, the rotted seats and the chipped paint and can imagine a jewel in disguise. I bet you guys have said or heard this before! I would have passed by this car but that 327 with 45 year old grease and dirt on all the numbers did me in. The car moves under it's own power. Over the last 10 years it was run periodically.

Now down to business. I'll be looking for lots of advice in the future on this one. Being an early car there are probably oddities the books won't reveal. I'm in it for the long haul to do a correct restoration. I hope you all will bear with me. I plan to document and photograph the entire process and will do a website. I will not be starting the project until I get some work area organization done. Unfortunately I have limited garage space.

I'll post some more pictures later.

    Rich

    Re: C1 1962 "Major" Project

    Rich--
Congrats. I saw it on ebay---an intriguing car. As I recall it has NOM motor, among other things--but lot's of potential. What you're going to run up against is that very early 1962 cars are more difficult (and potentially more expensive) to restore because of the very small number of 327's built up to that point. There are a lot more potential donor blocks, e.g., for a May 1962 car than a September 61 car, since they didn't start making 870 small blocks prior to the 62 model year. The same holds true with any other part if you are going to utilize original parts. Repros aren't an issue, because it costs no more to stamp 61G than it does 62D.
    Have fun with it!
    Mike

      Hi Mike,

Right, the listing said NOM, but to my ultimate surprise the pad revealed the truth, along with the 2870 block cast date of H251 .....

          Rough?????

          Rich,
This doesn't look bad at all. You should see some of the straight axles that I've dragged home over the years. Take your time and document and photograph everything as you take it apart. Also through away NOTHING until you are completely finished and satisfied that it's not needed. Good luck, it's a great car. Rich

                Re: Rough?????

Wow! If I'd have known it was original motor, I'd have been bidding on it. (I have this weakness for 62's--28 of them over the years). I'd never live long enough to finish that car, but I'm always loving the opportunity to do another "dig" on another 62. 2+ years ago I brought home a 62 fuelie that had sat since he blew (and threw away) the motor in 1975. The FI unit, distrib, and air cleaner had been buried in his garage since then, and not seen since 1977 (home to a number of generations of critter) So much fun to look at every component and authenticate and then try to figure out had been changed and why.
I have about 700 62's in my files with original dates/codes--I'd appreciate as you go through it every code that you find. Early and late cars are especially interesting!
                Congratulations again!

                  Re: Rough????? (Mike)

Yes Mike that's the amazing part. I didn't know either until I had the owner check the numbers. I was just curious if it was a Corvette 327 block or not. When I called him to tell him what he had he was shocked too. When I got there I verified the cast date as he couldn't see it easily. My son cleaned off the thick sludge and there it was.

We've seen some interesting things already. I'll be documenting every code and number on the way and will be happy to forward the info I gather. BTW the cars front bumpers were removed and stored under his bed in 1972 are like new, along with 2 NOS side rocker panels in the wrappers he bought in 1975. He never installed them. I think we'll make those the very last things we install on the car.

                    Rich--
You probably noticed that the NOS rockers have paint in the inserts, and the originals on the car do not---your early serial number obviously needs the unpainted. One of my 62's, an original paint car, never damaged, had one painted and one not.

Re: paint in the inserts & "rough"

I thought the paint on the rockers was gone from age and Florida sun! See I'm learning already. Is it possible to remove the paint on the new ones carefully, chemical stripper or something else? Are unpainted ones available, maybe special order from one of the usuals?(ka-ching)

So I guess "rough" is one of those "eye of the beholder" issues. I see really rough, but then again, there are probably rougher ones as you say guys. The frame is "really really really rough".

Thanks for all your help in advance,
                        Rich

                            Congrats!!

Paint on the NOS rockers will eaily remove with aircraft grade paint stripper (availible @ pep boys or any paint jobber). Follow this up with lacquer thinner to remove the messy goo and then hot soapy water.
