1966 Standard Shock Labels which direction

I checked the Archives, but still am unclear as to in what direction are the Shock labels affixed to the Shock.

I know that they need to be placed 2.5" below the top weld, that they need to be placed for easy viewing by the judges, but my question is as follows:

When placing the Labels on the Shocks, do the letters run vertically (with the length of the shock, top to bottom) or horizontily (when viewing with the shock installed, the letters would look like they are sideways) on the shock when they are installed?

    Thanks in advance

    Nick,

    1. If you think that they were all placed, 2.5 inches below the top weld, I've got some swamp land to sell you.... That may be an approximate location but don't haul out a ruler to check it. Judging visibility is the main (only?) criteria on where to place them. Why? Because if they can't be seen they won't exist to the judge.

    2. See below of my front left shock with the label installed. That should answer your question.

      Nick,
A couple of years ago, when I started the restoration process on my '65 I had the same question. Before I applied the broadcast stickers to my new shocks, I carefully cleaned and examined my originals.

The broadcast stickers were affixed so that the letters read in the horizontal position. That is also to say that the stickers long dimension is perpendicular to the axis of the shock absorber.

If I confussed you, please reply and I do a better job of explaining.

      Regards,
      Gene

Dang, Patrick...You need to smear some old used diesel motor oil on those control arms before they get pitted!

I'll probably have some guy think we're nuts and chastise me again if "used diesel motor oil" comes up again.
