    Brake Noise

There is a metalic squeaking noise coming from the right rear wheel on my 68 L-89. This only happens after the car has been moving for a few minutes or after evrything has warmed up back there. The noise dissipates when the pedal has been applied. The car has manual brakes semi-metallic pads and stainless sleeved calipers.

I took a look back there myself and found nothing apparent and had a reputable mechanic look who also found nothing.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated

    Re: Brake Noise

Remove both rear wheels and install a few or all lug nuts on both wheels and with the car supported on jack stands and in gear watch the pads ride on the brake disc. If you see movement back and forth, read inboard and outboard movement I think you have found your squeak. And if this is where the squeak is you probably have a car that the revits have been removed that attached the brake disc to the spindle.

      Jim and Noel-----

I agree. Very often the rear rotor runout problem is what causes this sqeeking. It is caused by the ends of the brake pad backing plates rubbing on the calipers due to the lateral motion of the pads created by the runout. The key symptom is the fact that the noise disappears when the brakes are applied.

There are kits available to "insulate" the end of the brake pad backing plates from the caliper. However, these are a strictly "band aid" solution. They treat the symptom and not the cause. Since the rotor runout problem has other much more consequential ramifications, the runout problem must be corrected. Loss of brakes due to the oft-discussed "air pumping" problem is the primary reason to eliminate excessive rotor runout. When that's accomplished, the squeeking will also go away.

        Re: Brake Noise ???

That's funny - that's the opposite of my 66 which only squeaked when braking to a stop. The squeak was due to the cross pin rubbing on the pads. Stick lubricant lasted a thousand miles but a new spindle solved that problem.

This car may have bad spindle bearings or universal joints. - Dave
