    '69 Transmittion bearing replacement

When pressing the clutch on my '69 car the clutch bearing is making a sort of grinding noise. Sander told me it likely needs replacement. Two questions:

    1) Could it be it only needs greasing and can this be done without pulling the tranny (through the clutch boot on the bellhouse)?

    2) If the bearing needs replacing what is the procedure to do this? This service manual is not crystal clear on the procedure and I was wondering if any alternative description is somewhere (on-line) available?

    thanks,
    Rob.

    Rob -

The bearing is permanently lubricated and can't be greased - it must be replaced. You'll need to remove the driveshaft, remove the shift linkage and support, and pull the transmission all the way back in order to replace the throwout bearing.

If the throwout bearing is going bad, the noise will change when you depress the clutch pedal. The noise will be different when the pedal is all the way up, and when you put just a little pressure on it.

In order to replace the throwout bearing, you'll need to pull the transmission. If you're going to do all that work, you should consider replacing the clutch and the pilot bushing while you're there.

The pilot bushing is the bushing that fits in the end of the crankshaft that the snout of the transmission goes into.

I don't have a '69 service manual. But all this should be in there. This job is an ordinary one. Regular maintenance.

The only uncertainty in this job is when you go to put the bearing on the fork. There's a special way it's done. The clutch kit should have a nice picture in the instructions. The service manual should also show a picture. If you don't find it, write again when you come to do this job.

            Oh-

That's the sintered bronze bushing in the crankshft where the tip of the transmission input shaft is inserted.
