Part # for Sender Unit - Joe Lucia can you help

I recently placed an order with GM Parts Direct for a fuel sending unit for my '68. As recommended by this Board I ordered part #6428164. When the unit arrived the part number on the unit was 6428127. Does anyone know if 6428127 has superseded 6428164? Is it the same sending unit? Thanks for any replies.

    Michael-----

I'm still out-of-town so I can't check on this right now. However, I don't think that there's been any supercession here. I think that the number on the box is the part number for the CONTENTS of the box. As I recall, this includes a sender and either an instruction sheet or a rubber gasket. If so, the part number of the sender, alone, will usually be different than the part number on the box.

There's also the possibility that the number that you're seeing on the unit is not the part number for the complete unit but, rather, the part number for some COMPONENT of the complete unit.

Joe, thanks for the response. I was surprised that the unit was sent loose. No GM box but the sending unit had a sticky label with the 6428127 part number on it and the o-ring seal was loose in the shipping box. The unit appears to be new. Hopefully you are right and 6428127 is reference to the sending unit component only. Once you return home, can you check for me? I greatly appreciate your assistance. Either way, I will check out the operation of the unit before installing.

Micheal, I have the same sender, still new it the AC Delco box. The part number on the box is 6428164, the ORIGINAL P/N. The P/N on the paper tag SPECIFICALLY states that is a SERVICE SENDER P/N 6428127. There are many reasons the P/N on the SERVICE replacement could be different (wire colors, wire terminal coating, sender finish, etc.). FWIW. Dave

I just got off the phone with the Parts Manager (another Corvette Nut) and he told me what you have is correct

Thanks to all. I do appreciate it. I had waited so long for the part and then my heart dropped into my stomach, thinking I received the wrong part. It did look identical to my current fuel sender but the internals could have been wrong. Thanks again.
