    C2 1967 A.I.R. Smog System

I have an original California "JA" 427-435HP that is missing the smog system - I have been able to locate most of the original parts to put this system back on the engine - the smog pulley #3880800 is being reproduced and I purchased one - this repro is not a "deep groove" pulley like the other pulleys on this engine - does anyone know if this smog pump pulley should also be deep groove, or is it a standard groove? - THANKS for the help!

check out the junk yards (in calif) for 6 cyl chevy 250 ci pickup trucks. their smog pump pulley has the same part # stamped on it as the 67 435 smog corvettes had. i've got one of each. nither corvete nor truck are handy to check pulley depth but i'm faily certain they aren't deep groove pulleys. mike

Mike - THANKS for this info - the pictures I have been able to get off the internet seem to show the narrow pulley and not the deep groove - but, I was not sure on this

        Chuck----

They are not "deep groove". At least, they are not what I would call "deep groove".

          Chuck –

The 3880800 and the 3890421 are not deep groove pulleys. These two A.I.R. pump pulleys are use on both SB and BB ’66-’67 Corvettes. The 800 pulley is the only one used on Corvette BB’s; it bolts directly to the pump and is driven by a water pump add on pulley third belt track . It is good to know that the 800 pulley is reproduced; as the 421 has a larger center pilot hole for a spacer used on some 300hp and all L79 SB's.

As Mike pointed out, the 3880800 was used on other Chevys such as L6 & V8 Camaros ; this is probably why it is still available. Please contact me, I have a ’67 BB pulley chart that needs to be checked.

THANKS everyone who responded to my A.I.R./smog pulley question - it does appear that the pump pulley is a "narrow groove" on the 427/435HP engine - all of the other pulleys are "deep groove" which was designed to keep the belts from flying off at high RPMs - no wonder these systems were removed the same day as delivery!

              Chuck,

I'd be interested to know where you found your smog system components. I need most of a system for my car. I'm looking for a smog system for my 66 big block and would like to know of your sources if you would be willing to share.

              Thanks,
              Mark

                Mark -

The K-19 (A.I.R.) "guru" is Bill Hodel, in Massillon, Ohio, (330) 832-0871. Be sure you're sitting down when you inquire about pricing.

                  Re: C2 1967 A.I.R. Smog System

I already did. That's why I'm looking elsewhere. I'm not looking to fund someone's retirement with one purchase, just buy some parts for my car. Now, I've been in this hobby long enough to know that parts are getting more and more expensive as time goes on, so I realize that it's not going to be cheap to get some of the items I need. I'm just looking for some other sources, that's all. I'm looking to eventually top flight my car and I know I can do that without having a complete system installed, so it's not life or death to me.

I'm reminded of a friend that found a fuel injection unit years ago and vowed that he would "never pay $1,500 for that!" Sure enough, he didn't. He gladly paid $3,500 for the same unit a few years later. Lesson learned, but I know my car will run just fine without the A.I.R. smog system and I don't know that I'll ever be willing to pay $5,000 (what Bill wants for it) for a system that most people threw away and that he probably got for next to nothing. That's fine if someone will pay that. It's not worth that much to me and I guess that's just my opinion. Not necessarily anyone elses.

                  Thanks for the response,
