Steering gear lube question for Joe

Joe - My old fifth edition Chevrolet Power Manual shows the 14.5 oz. "Corvette" steering gear lube, and we know the listed p/n has been superceeded by 12377985. A couple of lines above there is a listing for "manual steering gear lube", 10 oz. My question is: Is this the same grease as the "Corvette" specified lube, and the different p/n is just because of the smaller size tube. Thanks!

Re: Steering gear lube question for Joe

    Duke-----

The special Corvette steering gear lubricant, originally GM #1052084 and currently GM #12377985, was always and is currently supplied in a standard 14.5 oz cartridge. However, there is another manual steering gear lube, GM #1052182, which IS supplied in a 10 oz "squeeze tube". This lubricant is used in most other GM manual steering gearboxes, but NOT Corvette. Sometimes it is mistakenly used in Corvettes, though. The viscosity of this lubricant is considerably less than the Corvette-specified lubricant. When it is used in place of the correct lubricant, leaks from the Pitman shaft seal often result.
