Having trouble removing my power steering valve, all manuals that I've read say to remove nut from valve and pitman arm then use a ball joint separator. Neither the valve or the pitman arm move up or down, is there something else that needs to be removed to do this? This one really makes me feel stupid! Thanks for any help!!! Mike

Re: Power steering control valve removal
C2's and C3's use the same power steering system. I'll assume you are talking about one of these. There is a cotter pin that goes through a hole in the top of the bolt that holds the control valve to the pitman arm. When you remove the cotter pin, it allows you to unscrew the nut that holds the two together. Once the nut is off, you need a tie rod separator (ball joint separator) or "pickle fork" to get the two apart. They can be really stuck together good, and appear as though they do not move up and down, but they will when they come apart. This usually will tear up the ball joint seal on the control valve, so you will need to replace it (I'm pretty sure it comes in the re-build kit). I've re-built my PS control valve, and the hardest part was getting it off the vehicle. See the archives for a record of my mis-adventures. - David Knowles

Re: Power steering control valve removal
I have removed mine three times using most of the procedure that David outlined - EXCEPT that I used a joint puller instead of a pickle fork. The joint pullers are available at auto and discount stores. I added a small U shaped 14ga sheet steel plate to the puller for a good grip on the joint. It came right off without a fight. Get a good set of tubing wrenches for the hydraulic lines. - Dave- Top
