While using my original 1976 L-48 4-speed to obtain information for another member it was brought to my attention that my vehicle does not appear to have an air injector pump. I purchased the vehicle new and every part on it except for air/oil filters, battery and tires (recalled 500's) came from the factory. I am being told that all 1976 4-speed vehicles used the air injector pump. This is a late 76 production vehicle and I am wondering if that could explain the absence of a pump. Can anyone confirm that there were 1976 vehicles produced without the pump. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 1976 Emissions
All emission controlled engines have an emission certification label in the engine compartment that has abbreviations for the specific emission control systems. The Abbreviation for Air Injection Reactor is "AIR".
So if your car still has what appears to be the original emission certfication label, it will tell you the answer.

Art-----
For 1976, only California-delivered Corvettes had AIR. All others used the "controlled combustion system" (CCS) and no AIR pump will be found on them. Your emissions sticker may be GM #458578 and coded "XX". Otherwise, it should be GM #372564 and of unknown code. If yours is the latter part number, I would appreciate your posting of the label code found in the upper left corner of the label.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Jack-----
I think that the JG is incorrect on this one. Here's how I have it:
1975----ALL Corvettes used AIR; no exceptions
1976----California-only used AIR for both L-48 and L-82 regardless of transmission; all L-82 used AIR (correction from my earlier post); all others used CCS;
1977----L-48 with federal emissions used CCS; L-82 with federal emissions and auto trans used CCS; all others used AIR.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1976 Emissions
Paul Borowski and I have worked through this some time ago and agree with Joe and Ken on this...a few modifications are required in the Tech Reference and Judging Guide on emissions. We're both at the Lowe's Speedway Regional. Those JGs have many errors and emissions is but one area that needs some attention.Tom Russo

Re: 1976 Emissions
Thanks everyone for all of the information. I did not have an opprotunity last night to check the label but I will do so over the weekend. As was noted I became concerned that something was amiss when I referred to the JG. I have not found too many discrepencies in the guide and needed to verify there was a reason for mine not having a pump. I will post the information on the label and a picture early next week. Thanks again.- Top

Re: 1976 Emissions
Thanks to everyone's help I located the emissions sticker on the power brake booster. It is GM#458578. Since it makes no reference to A.I.R. I will assume the vehicle did not come equipped with the air pump. Thanks again for all of the information.- Top
