    Access Problem With the NDB

For most of the day, when I tried to access the board I got "access denied" message. Did others have this problem, too, or was it just my terminal?

Joe, I didn't get that alert. However, any connection was EXTREMELY slow! Has John been "tinkering" again?

I got the same message, access denied. Maybe I should pay my dues faster.

Yeah Joe, happened to me too. Cleared up after a while all on it's own.

              Jerry,

I e-mailed John earlier today to let him know it was happening, and he e-mailed back saying it was probably a resources problem again.

                Joe and everyone else,

Twice yesterday permissions were turned off for the config.cgi script. This is what used to happen on the other servers before we moved to this site.

I e-mailed tech support about the problem, and they replied that their technicians were tinkering with the server. They may have turned it off in order to free resources for their upgrade. They are supposed to contact me later. The bottom line at least for now is that we don't have a problem, and maybe their tinkering will improve response times.

                We can only hope!

                John

                  John,

As I understand it, NDB is "renting" space on someone's host server; what else does the host provide, and what would keep NCRS from purchasing its own server? Is it only $$$, or other additional reasons?

Re: Access Problem With the NDB *TL*

The basic reason that NCRS doesn't buy their own server is MONEY. Practically no website is really hosted on someone's own server. If you look at one website on a P-III 650 or so with 256 meg of ram, and a fast SCSI Hard Drive running Unix OS and Freebsd webserver software, you are probably talking about a $3,000 dollar machine, that is going to be obsolete in 18 months. Now add on an internet connection that is redundant OC-3 or better, someone to operate a nightly backup of the system and support your connection you are looking at a monthly charge on top of your purchase price.

Or you can rent space on a Sun Sparc Station with 1,012 meg of ram and multiple RAID 1-5 hard drives that costs $30,000 and share that machine with many other sites. It has redundant internet connections direct to the main internet pipes, it has nightly backup, provides use of several hundred dollars of software and charges $30.00 per month.

The real trick is to get a deal with a high capacity server that has the fewest clients running on it at one time. The server that the Discussion Board is on is separate from the rest of the ncrs.org site. It costs almost twice as much as the other site. It has less features and less disk space. But it provides the same high end server with about 1/3 of the clients on one server.

The reason that the NCRS provides and supports the discussion board is that attracts people to the website. Many of these people are NCRS members, so it is a service for them. Many of those who are not members, catch the bug here on the discussion board and become members. That is what makes the board a win, win proposition.

As traffic gets higher and higher the number of new members that we attract will increase, and the board will be able to support moving up to the next level of server. We will have to double our cost again to be on a server with even less other clients.

                    John,
