Anyway to remove and restore 78 C3 Tank Sticker

Drop the fuel tank on my 78 Silver Anniversary. Good News is that the tank sticker is there. Bad new is that it is stuck on and pretty much unreadable.
What is the best way to remove the sheet from the tank? And has anyone had any luck bringing out faded text? UltraViolet? Lemon juice?

John - I know I read an article in the last year or so about how a guy who removed and was able to read an apparently illegible tank sticker - the problem is I can't for the life of me remember where I read it. But it was an interesting article and apparently it can be done without destroying the original sticker.

I get the NRCS Restorer, Corvette Fever, Corvette Quarterly, Corvette Enthusiast, and even Corvette Magazine, so it could be any of these sources. Sorry I can't be of more help. If I happen to run across it again, I'll let you know.

My first problem is to remove the sticker from the tank without damaging it further. There is soem sort of glue holding the center portion of the sticker to the tank.

I'm planning to simply cut the metal around it, since the tank is crappy (and dry) inside. I plan to keep both the metal and the remaining attached paper in a box of some sort...

        What do you think?

John, you might try taking some digital pics under various lighting conditions and enhancing them with something like Corel Paint Shop Pro XI or other software programs. You can enlarge the image as well as increase both the contrast and sharpness...maybe enough to read it. I've never tried this with a tank sticker, but had some luck with old documents. It's worth a shot...Good Luck! Pete

            John:

Take pictures first before attempting to remove. Cutting the tank up with sticker still attached is one method. An alternative is to use a razor blade and cut the glue such that it remains with the paper rather than on the tank...this is the usual method for those attempting such a feat.

            Shoot some pics and post.

              John:

According to information in the archives, a copy of the Dealer Wholesale Invoice is available for 1977-up Corvettes. Cost is $50.00. This will provide VIN, Ident Number, selling dealer, build and ship dates, body style, paint color, interior color, all options, etc. Search under BUILD SHEETS by John Hinckley (Monday, August 28, 2006), and my name (Thursday, August 24, 2006).

Hope this helps. It should provide equivalent documentation.

              Regards, Larry Mulder

I recall seeing an article in COrvette Fever magazine many years ago that told how to remove and restore the tank sticker using ether. I dont recall what issue, try a search.
