Ok here is the deal, all brand new Lectric limited wire harness', second brand new gauge (I thought the other new one could be defective) I have a solid 12 volts at the pink wire and a good ground at the black wire. When I ground out the green wire at the terminal or at at the sending unit the gauge only advances to half way. At 185 degrees when hooked up the needle barely moves past the 100 degree mark. The first new gauge did the same thing.

Re: 1969 Temperature Gauge
Yes, same principal as earlier temp gauges... Two opposing electro magnets (inductors) pulling on the pointer needle. One side is fixed (pulls the needle to the 'cold' side) while the other side is variable based on current flow through the temp sender (pulls the needle to the 'hot' side).
Gauge needs to see ground via being bolted into the instrument cluster to work properly. At 180F (normal operating temp), a correct/original temp sender should have a resistance value of 90-102 ohms. Plus, Shark era temp gauges were factory calibrated by final test operator picking/choosing from a selection of precision, wire-wound, resistors that were installed on the back of the gauge in 'shunt' circuit fashion for the characteristics of that specific unit...- Top
