    C3: Battery cable replacement

    Hi all,

Yesterday, while having the tranny out, I reconned it was a good time to replace the positive battery cable since it has a wrong terminal at the battery side.

After removing the clips and replacing the cable I was struggling to get the big cable grommet in place. The drive shaft was already removed to facilitate the tranny removal but still I can't get it in. To ease the job I sprayed the hole area with WD40 but still no show. Any hints and tips???

    greetings,
    Rob.

Use liquid car wash soap. With the battery removed, I carefully pulled the grommet into place from the battery side. There is nothing easy about this job. I did it on my '74 last summer... with the transmission (THM400) still in.

I strongly suggest you replace the transmission tunnel insulation while you are at it. By now its pretty well destroyed by heat and exposure to oil leaks, water, dirt, etc.

I'd try dipping it in a hot pan of boiling water for a couple of minutes to soften it up and then apply a light grease like white lithium to the leading edges and then work it in while it's still good and warm.

Just the farmer in me coming out Rob

I know it's quite a stought hunk of rubber especially with the cable running through it.

                Rob,

                I've installed 2 so far, 1 in my '68 & the other in a friends '74.

I agree with Lee's method of pulling it through from the battery side, but I used spray silicon instead of car wash soap (either will work fine).

Be sure to keep steady pressure, don't yank it up or you'll pull it all the way through.

                Good luck,

                Anthony
