I have a 1971 coupe that has electric windows. They are slow and don't go all the way up. It seems when they go down they tilt one way then tilt the other way when going up. Something is lose I assume and they are probably gummed up and dirty. Any suggestions on what I should do or replace? Are the motors weak or shot? Are there any books, literature, diagrams, etc. that can show how to remove the glass as I also need to remove the outer window sweeps to paint the car. What else should be done to the door while it is apart, clean latches, should I replace any parts on the latches or lock mechanisms? Any help greatly appreciated. Mark

Re: power windows on 1971
The power windows on your 71 should be very quick in moving up or down, I say this because my 70's are. Buy a 71 service manual from the NCRS book store, it will have a good section on what you will need. Take off the door panel and examine the operation. I cleaned out the tracks of my 70 about 18 years ago and it really helped the movement.- Top

Re: power windows on 1971
Mark - One of the windows on my 1970 was slow, and neither would go up all the way with the top up. After cleaning both window regulators, it was obvious I had to replace the motor on the driver's side, but both still would not go all the way up. So I had to adjust the various weatherstipings over and over, and I also applied alot of silicone/conditioner to the weatherstrip. Now both work perfectly, and go all the way up even with the top up. Good luck. Patrick Moresi #45881- Top

Re: power windows on 1971
There are different versions of the PW motor that were released over time with the later versions typically downward compatible with prior year useage. In general, one of the things that 'improved' over time was the speed profile of the PW motor. So, some of your 'problem' could be related to whether the motors are factory original to the car or not + your expectations on operation if you've become used to today's modern PW performance.
On door internal track wear + rigidity of the glass while in motion and start/stop position, there IS a latitude here. Internal components DO wear/break resulting in 'slop' that wasn't a factory original trait. Also, there are a NUMBER of individual adjustments for the door glass (up/down, fore/aft, in/out and start/stop points). These are discussed reasonably well in the Chassis Service Manual and if you don't have a copy of this book, I'd advise its purchase--it's a VERY handy reference!- Top

Re: power windows on 1971
Mark,
In the event that you determine you need a new power window motor, check the January 13, 2002 archives for a post by Jack Humphrey. He explains how you can possibly find an inexpensive scrap yard motor from different GM models.
