    '66 L79 Valve Covers

I've got a 66 L79 with the production date of June 10, 1966, did the original valve covers for this car have the flaw through the "o" in "Corvette"? When did that happen and did it continue throughout the prodction year?

    thanks,

    Matt

    Matt,

Your car should have the Flaw ! The JG says it appears at about VIN 17000 , Or March of 66. This board has had several discussions as to when they really ran out of the non-flawed ones , my 20??? car had the no-flaw covers, and I think others in this range also had some , but I would think most would agree that by June it was a done deal !

By the way the flaw ran through "V" not the "O" ! Maybe yours are after market ones !!!

    Just kidding !!

        '66 L79 Valve Covers

        Matt,

My July 20 build date '66 had one valve cover with the flaw and one without. My car is a very original car and I'll spoken with all the previous owners and no one claims to have changed one valve cover. Plus they both look the same vintage with the same patina. So, I'm voting that they are original.

But for judging, I have another set that was beautifully restored by John DeGregory and this 2nd set has the casting flaw and that set is what I will install when the time comes. I went this route because there would be no way to convince the judges that my original mixed set was installed by GM. I'll fight over other judging battles.

          Matt,

My June built '66 had what appeared to be the original, unflawed valve covers. I was able to trade them with someone that had the flawed ones. Looking back now, I wouldn't have bothered. I guess for judging purposes, you have to conform to the manual, or lose points. I have the registrations for my car back to '69 and none of the previous owners recall changing them.

            Late '66 L79 Valve Covers

            Rob,

This is one of those situations where all '66s built after March or so, that are to be judged by NCRS, are eventually going to have the covers with the flaw, regardless of how those cars originally came of the assembly line. History is being lost here because the NCRS TIM&JG gives no flexibility.
