Re: Just add a little Marvel Mystery Oil ...

MMO is a wonderful product, if you have an engine that has been sitting for a length of time, just remove the plugs and fill cyls with it, good top end oil when added to gasoline. If storing your car for a length of time add a little to the gas, run a gallon or so thru the engine. Will aid in keeping the valves from sticking. Add a litte to the oil before storage, good to keep the rings from sticking. Has been on my shelves for over 40 years, buy it by the gallon now.

Complaint department please Dickie, My post went from a lead fuel to a commercial for Marvel Mystery oil. Glad you agree that MMO is wonderful stuff. I believe I saw it at Walmart if I am not mistaken. I use it in my trailer generator also. Take care, John

I tried some about 7 years ago. My Mustang had sat awhile and when I got it running, it had a hydraulic lifter that kept ticking. I decided that since I had nothing to loose, I would put some Marvel in there to see if it would free up the lifter. It did the trick, and I never had to tear into the engine to fix the lifter.

I may need to try some of this stuff after all. Like I mentioned earlier, it always made me wonder how this stuff could be around so long if it was useless.

                          Other types of home remedies

Years ago, when I'd buy a car with questionable oil changes, I'd change out with 3 qt cheap oil and 1 qt transmission fluid. Run the engine until it was warm and up to temperature, then shut it off and drain the oil. Then put in my good oil. Lifters would often clatter for a day and then go quiet, even the ones that rattled before the treatment. It usually meant the oil changes were fairly clean oil after that, to.

Old guys (sounds strange to say that now, but then, most of them are dead) used to tell me about how they would pour a pint or a quart of diesel in the crankcase a day or two before an oil change. It would clean all the crud stuck in there out.

Even Clem and Roy have mentioned the "steam cleaning" by pouring some water down the carb while the engine is running. But I have heard of some who did a different take on that and on the Marvel Mystery oil, by using a little diesel to do a top lube while it was running.

I knew some who would store an old car and prep it by mixing a quart of oil with a quart of gas and pouring it down the carb. Just a little at first, so you could see smoke out the exhaust, then dump it faster to kill the engine with the mix. This supposedly left the cylinders and valves lubed with oil for the long sleep it would go through until it came out of storage.

I wonder what some of these would do to a 2007 car with all the engine monitors and sensors?
