    Stonechip Repair and Paint Feathering

My 1967 was painted in 2005 and I have been waiting patiently for the inevitable: the first bruise. Well it has happened. I picked up a nasty stonechip on the nose (touch-up paint added by me). Before I go to the bodyshop to get a "Corvette" price for repair I would appreciate advice:
    1) What resin/compound should be used to fill in the chip?
    2) How far away from the bruise will the new paint have to be feathered?
    3) The paint is BC/CC Sherwin-Williams. Can another brand of paint be used for the repair? The original painter is over an hour away and I wish to find a place closer that in all likelihood use another brand.
    4) How many hours should be charged?

The tape is there just to hold the penny in place.

    Paul:

Oh, Oh, now you should strip the entire car and repaint!

Seriously, rather than repaint ANYTHING, I would first try filling the entire chip with new paint (color, assuming single stage paint job). Then wet sand using a flat file as a sanding board, under 600/1000/2000 wet/dry paper. Compound and polish the entire area, as if it were a fresh paint job. If paint is 2 stage, first, carefully apply a thin layer of color, then fill entire chip with clear coat, and proceed as above.

      Joe,

        Hey Paul
I saw a program on paint chip repair and just to be quick about it, you fill the chipped area with paint in thin coats and let dry. When you have built the paint up higher than the true finish and let dry you do a wet sand as explained already and buff and polish. It sounds easy but I haven't had to do it, so good luck, I'm sure it's a nice machine.
        Ken.

Thanks Ken and Joe. That sounds a little tedious but it's worth a try. Can't harm anything. The car is not NCRS material but I enjoy it very much.

            Another Question

If I decide to fill that chip with clear coat and sand, where do I find such a small quantity? We are speaking of model airplane needs.

Go to detailing paint chip repair. The system works. I've done it my self on all my cars including my 67 Corvette.
              Good luck

I saw an ad on TV, probably the same one the others report, and ordered the stuff for the first paint chip I got on my 2006 C6. I was very, very surprised at how well it worked. The repair cannot be seen, even I can fidn where i did the chip repair.

One of the keys to success is having matching touch up paiont available.

Here is the web site for the product http://www.langka.com

I thanks everyone for their tips. I do have touch-up paint and will give one of those techniques a try before I visit a body shop.

                        Paul,
Why not give a report back on the product when you get it? I would love to hear the results. I am sure others might, too.

Re: Ordered the Langka Kit Today

Gary, I ordered yesterday (Sunday) by the internet as noted earlier from that company in Washingston State. Had an e-mail last night from a local supplier saying he could provide the product (on a Sunday night). I am in Ontario, Canada. He delivered the product by personal vehicle this evening (Monday)!! Wow, that's service! The local distributors must be very well connected to home office. So much so that I have not have a chance to do the paint build-up and try the product. Will do so in coming days. It may not work but I am blown-away by the service....

As is the case with most band-aid solutions, this product looks like a touch-up repair. I should have known better but you can get consumed on the hype and hope. It may work with tiny stonechips but not in my case. I will keep it around for that purpose. So off to the body/paint shop. I spoke with a local GM shop today with pics but will have them look at the car tomorrow.

Paul, for what it's worth, I ordered the Langka kit when I had my Millenium Yellow 2000. I wasn't impressed with it.
